Ce type d’agriculture, qui est de plus en plus populaire, peut être communautaire, commerciale ou privée.
Bénéfices
L’agriculture urbaine comporte de nombreux avantages en raison de sa situation privilégiée dans les villes. Voici les principaux :
- L’embellissement urbain : transformation d’espaces inesthétiques en espaces verts et horticoles.
- La protection de l’environnement : réduction des îlots de chaleur, absorption des eaux pluviales, maintien d’une certaine biodiversité et recyclage de la matière organique grâce au compostage.
- L’autonomie alimentaire : préparation d’aliments par les citadins pour leur consommation personnelle.
- L’établissement et le développement de nouvelles relations sociales par l’entremise d’une activité peu coûteuse et productive.
- La sensibilisation de la population aux réalités des activités agricoles et la découverte des particularités des aliments.
Les différentes initiatives d’agriculture urbaine favorisent aussi la biodiversité en ville. Par exemple :
